This is what my grandfather had to say about the war:
The Marines had it easy.
The carpenters — he was a carpenter,
In the war, at least.
He was an oilfield man when he came back —
The carpenters went onto the island first
To build landing strips on the beach.
They had to clear the Japs off the beach
And they had to keep shooting them
As they came out of the jungle.
